Fate/stay night Volume 1 (Fate/Stay Night (Tokyopop))

see relatedYes, I know I am verifiably insane for making a post at 7AM, but hey, for some reason I'm still up and I felt like it.
Classes aren't any different right now compared to when I last posted, except that I dropped Differential Equations since it was kicking my ass, eating all my time, and still not getting good grades in it, all while messing over my performance in my other classes at the same time. I'm also starting to seriously consider switching over to being a business major instead of a computer engineer...I'm really beginning to question if computer engineering is right for me, since although I have a blast tinkering with them and talking about them, I don't know if I'd really want to work with them at that level, especially if my cs140 class is any example of what it's like at that level...plus I've always had fun in any financial class I've had in the past, and it's pretty straightforward stuff that I'll have to at least learn the complexities of sooner or later if I ever want to understand my IRAs well enough to retire.
But enough of that.
In terms of fun stuff, today alone I managed to figure out how to rip a video stream off of ANY streaming video site with the help of a little program that tells you the IP of the stream in a URL format you can just paste into a browser and then you can just download it like it's a file. Because of the way it works you can use it on just about any video stream site, even niconico, so I'm happy.
Next, I tinkered around with VLC and found that if I went under preferences, set the video renderer to OpenGL, pressed Ctrl+G (opens the extended GUI), and selected the video filter "image clone" I could use it to play a video on both of my monitors that run at different native resolutions at the same time! It was really cool and since it was VLC it could run just about any file format. The only problem is it uses almost double the processing power for a video, so that effectively ruled out any of the 720p HD videos or processor heavy videos I had in my collection. Even still, it works fine for DVDs (I say fine because the deinterlacing seems to run a little...ehh...compared to normal, but it's still within acceptable levels. It's only really noticeable during really fast moving scenes.), and it works great for most other videos on my computer.
Japanese is proceeding at a comfortable pace. I found it really cool when I picked up and played the iDOLM@STER for the first time in months and found I could understand 90% of the song lyrics on the first pass, and I didn't have to use a dictionary or anything! It actually helped me like the music more since it's all a lot of really nice happy type material in the songs, instead of gloomy/grungy/sexual or emotionless whatever that seems to consist of most popular music nowadays.
In the games department, I've bought 3 360 games in the past two weeks (hey, one of them was $10, so totalled together they didn't cost all that much), Senko no Ronde, Armored Core: For Answer, and Guilty Gear 2: Overture. Senko no Ronde is mad fun, and it's rather sad since it had probably the worst catering to the proper demographic possible. Ubisoft apparently tried/tries to sell it off as some light mecha shooter game, when it actuality it's probably more like Touhou or Triggerheart Excellica. Senko no Ronde is what happens when you take the combos and health bar fighting game aspects of Soul Calibur and put it into a Touhou game. This game will rape you on the harder difficulties, really tick you off on the normal difficulty, and still be a challenge (cept it'll be actually FUN) on the easy difficulty. So basically it uses the same difficulty scale as Touhou. In this game, let me start out by saying think of Soul Calibur 4. Okay, now, instead of swords, replace them with typical mecha weaponry like missiles and guns that fire in typical shoot em' up patterns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmup). Now get rid of ring outs, make it in space, and you've basically got it. It's pretty fun.
Now for Armored Core: For Answer...
This is a mech game for people who really, really like mechs. The first time I popped the disk in and tried seeing what my starting mech's loadout was and the customizations you could do, I nearly stopped playing right there since I was so blown away by the borderline excessize level of customization and detail you could do. Eventually though when I figured it all out, it got to be a TON of fun. First I'd figure out what kind of weapon loadout I'd want for my primaries and secondaries, and then from their I'd modify the main frame to get the best mid-range of speed and armor I could that would still have enough capacity to hold everything I had strapped on it. Then from there (if you're smart) I'd go under the stabilize tab and try to strategically place stabilizers so as to balance my mech's center of gravity (and make it look cooler depending on). It absolutely blew my mind their attention to details... in one situation I intentionally made my mech's center of gravity focus more on it's left side, so whenever it fired the gattling gun on the opposite arm it would balance out and I could boost forward faster while firing...it's really cool. Then they go a step further and allow you to create custom images that you can put on your mech's main frame WHEREEVER you want! I made the gurren brigade logo and had flames on my mechs arms...and it doesn't lose any detail when you're in the actual game flying around in it!
And then there was Guilty Gear 2: Overture. This is an odd one... I would not describe this game as your traditional guilty gear game at all, but it definitely has that flavor to it. Heck, I don't really know what category this game would fall under....it's a fighting game, hack'n'slash, and mini-racing game all in one, and the way you transition between all three is seamless and completely at the players disgression... The only three characters you'd have heard of before in this game are Sol, Ky, and "That Man", and alot of the new characters -although they aren't bad- still make me long for Dizzy, Johnny, Faust, and the rest of the gang... The gameplay itself makes me think of Onslaught mode in Unreal Tournament 2004. Your character runs around using your units you can spawn to capture these nodes called "ghosts", trying to make a path of ghosts from your Master ghost to the enemy's Master ghost and then destroy theirs. You can be in any of three 'modes' as I like to call them. Normally you're in hack'n'slash mode. In this you run around all Dynasty Warriors-ish and can attack the groups of the enemy's servants as they come at you. The second mode is switched to by having an enemy in sight and holding down one of the triggers; doing so will switch you into what I like to call "fighting game mode". In this mode you focus more on one particular enemy and so although you are more succeptable to other enemies' attacks, you will be able to do considerably more damage with your attacks to the selected enemy, and you will also be able to do many more combos. Lastly, clicking one of the thumbsticks while in hack'n'slash mode will put you in what I call "racing mode". Basically your character goes into an all out sprint that you can adjust speed with the right thumbstick and make sharper turns by clicking one of the thumbsticks. It's mainly used to get around the battlefield much quicker, and it's really amusing to run in an almost stereotypical anime fashion...
Overall the game is tons of fun, and strangely, although the gameplay is almost nothing like all the other guilty gear games, it still seems to retain that distinct guilty gear flavor...
Sidenotes: the plot is actually explained and understandable this time, but the game has been dubbed... I like dubs normally and I still recommend the first thing you do after loading the game is going to options and switching the voices to Japanese.... the English voice actors they picked were mostly guuuhhh... *finger poking in mouth hand motion*
In other news, I've been making more custom characters in Soul Calibur 4, and I even made a slideshow of some of my better ones and posted it to my youtube account:
Personally I think they came out pretty well, though I wish it wasn't an unofficial rule of the game that any character that looks cool has to have sucky stats...
And as for anime this season, I'm currently keeping up with Clannad: After Story, Gundam 00 S2, Tytania, Toradora, Shikibane Hime Aka, Toradora, and Chaos;Head. I'd say more but now I'm really tired so I think I'm going to go to bed.

see relatedYeah, so it's been a while since I updated. In any case, cutting to the chase,
Summer classes were a total pain in the butt.... I had 11 credit hours, so basically multiply it by two and that's how much of a workload it feels like compared to a regular semester. Calc 2, Linear Matrix Algebra, and ECE 255. I am sick of math and I've got Differential Equations right now (Fall Semester).......ugh.
Right now my classes are really draining the life out of me, but at least I'm finally in a Japanese class....it's rather relaxing compared to everything else, since I'm actually able to enjoy it unlike my other classes where the teachers are of the "I am god, therefore you should be writing every word I say and then my angels (the TAs) will grade your notes for you on my behalf".......
In any case, back to fun stuff, since I really REALLY don't care to talk about depressing things right now, I've actually managed to pull off some really REALLY crazy cool stuff lately.
(click the images to see them in a higher resolution)
First up, about a week ago I spent time on two days messing around with script engines when something occurred to me, "If a script engine can rip a text stream from an active program, why not make a script to rip all the text streams from a visual novel?".
Basically it goes like this, I recently got my hands on Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (the sequel fandisc thing to Fate/Stay Night). The translation on the internet of it is at best, in pieces at the moment, and since I was getting really tired of spending five minutes trying to translate single sentences with two Japanese-English dictionaries and having limited success even then, I decided to try using some translation software on my computer I've had for a while. The problem is however, that the translation program requires actual TEXT to be present in order for it to translate, and I say this because visual novels more often than not display the text on screen as IMAGES to the computer, therefore you can't just go copy paste and get the text.
After I got this script working to pull the text streams, I set it to automatically store whatever new text appears to the clipboard (basically it would ctrl-c whenever new text appears in game), and then I set the translation program to automatically try translating anything that was copied to the clipboard whenever the clipboard changed.
It ended up working beautifully, and I was really happy with how it turned out. Here's an example of it running another new visual novel I've been getting into called "Little Busters":
(click the image to see it in a higher resolution)
Given, the translation software just offers you a machine translation, and although that means it comes out as engrish, this particular program has rather impressed me compared to most others at being at least getting words right and it's still plenty to get the gist of what's going on at least, so it works for me for now (this'll hold me over till I can read kanji better).
Next up is another project that I quite literally just got fully working tonight. If you noticed in the picture before, there was an icon to play Guitar Hero 3 on my desktop, so yes, I have Guitar Hero 3 for PC. And over the course of roughly 8 hours tinkering around spread out over 3 days, I've finally managed to do this:
(click the image to see it in a higher resolution)
No, that's not a photoshop, I actually got it working....and normally I'd be happier about this, but it was such a pain in the *** and a lot of work, and even still it's got a few things about it that are annoying (since tab files are created by people online they aren't always good/in sync, the process to import a song into the game is a long and tedious process, the game itself has a tendency to just act weird period, etc.). In any case, it was very rewarding to play a song that I could beat my suitemates at for once...
Lastly, I've discovered a new series entitled "Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners". It's a series of (short) movies that have been coming out that are made after the novels written by Nasu Kinoko (he wrote Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night), and they are VERY impressive.
Not just the storytelling, but the animation as well is top notch. The attention to details in both animation and story, and the excellent music arrangements all fit together to create an enticing story that most would enjoy deeply.
So far there's three movies out and just a heads up, just like Haruhi, they're out of chronological order. They're in the same order as the book chapters were originally, but chronologically the first movie should be the fourth, the second movie should be the first, the third movie is the third, and the fourth movie should be the second (when it comes out), so don't be afraid if you feel a little confused as to what's going on at first. In fact, I recommend actually reading the wikipedia article on it BEFORE watching it, because although it does give a considerable amount of information, it doesn't really ruin the experience or spoil much of anything, and to the contrary, if you don't at least have a background with Type-Moon's other productions, especially Tsukihime, then it will probably help you enjoy it considerably more than without it. (Also btw, Kara no Kyoukai was originally considered to be a sort of prototype for Tsukihime, so you may notice some similarities)
The story follows three main characters: Shiki Ryogi, Mikiya Kokutou, and Tōko Aozaki. Since each of them are rather complicated, I think it's best I just link you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_no_Kyoukai#Major_characters
(and don't worry too much about Azaka yet, she doesn't really play a major role until the fifth movie)
All you really need to know has one of the coolest powers I've ever heard of. She has what are called "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception" where she can see the threads/lines of death that resemble the "death" or "end" of anything (this even applies to inanimate objects and even in some cases, metaphysical as well).
(Holy crap those eyes look coool......Sharingan doens't even hold a candle to THAT!
)
And as you might have guessed, if she cuts along these lines then the object/person/thing is destroyed/ceases to live. And it usually looks like this when she's using them (she can sorta turn it on and off):
In any case, this show has also managed to get me to try out (and get hooked on) Haagen Dazs.
I never thought I'd ever like strawberry flavored ice cream, but just because I'm that much of a nerd, I decide I'd at least try it once....and I have to say, it actually does taste pretty good!

Lunar Legend Tsukihime Volume 3 (Lunar Legend Tsukihime)

see relatedDang it's been a long time.... I need to get back in the phase of posting more on this since I don't see everyone as often as I used to...
In any case. One year down. At least 3 more to go. My first year of college went pretty well actually I guess... my roommate was pretty cool and I was lucky to have a nice one. This coming fall I plan to room in a 4 person suite like thing (the room configuration where it's just two-two person rooms joined together with one bathroom) with a friend from my Engineering classes and one of his friends. We don't know who the fourth person will be but all I know is Big Dave (my friend's name is David too so we just go by "Big" and "little") said he'll keep him in line if he gives any of the rest of us trouble...
But that's all assuming I survive until Fall...
This summer I'm trying to take 3 classes, two of which are math classes, so I can free up enough time for the fall semester to take Japanese (FINALLY!!!). It's gonna be rough but assuming I survive Fall might be kinda fun... I was wondering earlier when I signed up for fall if I should've just skipped to 2nd year Japanese since I've gotten farther in the book they use on my own and actually have a fair level of reading and pronunciation skills on top of my vocabulary, but I figured it couldn't hurt to make sure (plus it'd be nice to have an easy not-raping me class for once).
But enough of the boring stuff. Most of you know by now that I'm a total and absolute nerd to the most extreme caliber. That being said, I decided to do a little project the past few days to protect one of my "overseas investments" you could say...

First I'm going to explain why I did what I did, then I'll explain what I did.
As most of you already know, I have a Japanese XBox 360 and I don't live in Japan. Microsoft has a policy of replacing any 360 that has suffered the 3 red lights (aka ring of death/fire) but I doubt in this case they'll replace an overseas console (at least not without me having to pay over $100 in S&H or talk to someone in Japanese...I'm not THAT fluent). Now, many products out there are designed to prevent this from occuring by cooling the console better like the Nyco Intercooler. The Nyco Intercooler though, ironically, due to the way it plugs into the console via feeding from the main power brick plug, has been known to take too much power from the console, thus causing underpowering and thereby damaging the console even faster. I have seen it happen personally from one of my friend's consoles getting very strange hardware error messages whenever he had it plugged in, but when disconnected worked perfectly fine. Plus when I took my own intercooler apart I found their wiring didn't make sense at all (they had three 5V fans hooked into one 12V rail...no wonder it took too much power) Therefore, using a regular Intercooler is out of the question to me, so I decided to create something on my own to keep it cool and running better.
What I did is I took apart a laptop cooling pad that I had bought. The laptop pad, being USB powered feeds off of the power of the USB port, and considering USB ports only supply 5V I was rather impressed how well the two fans in the pad worked off of it. Once I took it apart I used Electrical tape to stick the two fans together on top of one another. Then, I secured them to the sides of the 360 and made it air tight so they gave better air displacement by using blue painter's tape (plus this way if I ever wanted to remove it they wouldn't leave residue). Luckily that was basically all I had to do for this since the fan power to usb power adapter was already there, I just had to unscrew it from inside the cooling pad case. From their I just turned it on and did a two hour 'test run' by trying to run the most demanding parts of games I could find (basically whichever parts made the system heat up the most and make noise), and at the end of it the console was just as cool as when it had been on for 5 minutes (normally you could sting your hand on it by then, so that's a huge improvement).
Not wanting to leave my poor American friend to burn, I decided to try making one for it too. Instead of another laptop USB cooling pad though, I took apart my intercooler instead. After opening it up, I disconnected the two main culminating red and black cables from the fans. I then found a 12 to 36 V range (the type that can do any in range) AC power adapter designed for printers and cut it open. After attaching the inner wiring of it to the red and the outer grounding to the black, I secured and covered it with electrical tape and removed the lower portion of the intercooler so as not to block the 360s power port. Now I've got a fully powered Intercooler that works better than ever and won't pose any risk to damaging my console.
Aside from all that I've been up to a few other fun things too. I've so far finished all but Ciel's routes in the Tsukihime Visual Novel by Type Moon. Akiha's is sad since you just can't win at life in any of her endings....and it made me really depressed... Arcueid's were nice and fitting, one being bittersweet and the other being somewhat happy, but the only truly happy ending in any of the character route's was Kohaku's, which really was cool by me.
But I digress...
In terms of shows lately I've been watching Macross Frontier, which I can only describe as this:
If there was a new Gundam Series that the mechs looked really cool, and there was lots of Jpop and dancing, and Jpop competitions while mech battles were going on elsewhere and they tied together nicely, then Macross Frontier would be it. For any of you who know me and how I'm a huge mecha fan, and how lately Idolm@ster has been pure bliss for me, then I'm sure you can imagine this show was purified compressed awesome for me. I can think objectively though and I realize this one may not be for everyone. It's still a really fun show though in many of it's own ways. The other shows on my roster are Golgo 13 (if Japan had an emotionless 007, Golgo would be him), Kurenai (...hard to describe...just plain interesting so far), and Kara no Kyoukai - which is actually a series of movies that are still coming out created by Type Moon (the same people who made Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime). If you have any basic-level knowledge of Tsukihime at all you may enjoy KnK. It's confusing at first and I'd definitely recommend reading the wiki page on it before watching the first movie (don't worry, it really doesn't spoil anything) since it's very deep, but it's an EXTREMELY well done and well animated movie. Once again, not really for everyone, but if you liked/seemed-interested-in Tsukihime, you'll probably like it.
Other news you may care for real quick, Gurren Lagann will be showing on Sci-Fi channel on July 18th at 11PM. If you haven't seen it before, watch it. It is worth every second of your time. Even my objective side of me is saying you should.
As for what I'm doing right now, I'm actually at work down on the UT campus at the Vet Hospital working as a PC Support Technician. It's kinda fun actually, the hours are very flexible, and the pay is great, so I can't complain at all....I just wish I could work more through the summer though, but it'll be difficult with all of my classes...
That and two days ago I found out a method for which I could get Microsoft Points that I could use to buy stuff in Idolm@ster (normally to get MS Points for a Japanese XBL account you have to have a credit card from there or import the point cards, both of which are nearly impossible for me). Apparently Singapore's XBL has the Idolm@ster recognized in it's database with all of the same downloads, the difference is Singapore's XBL accounts will accept AMERICAN point card codes (later I found they only accept certain point denomination codes....4000 point cards don't work though 1600 point cards do). Needless to say, this made me a bit happier since now I could download the songs and some of the items and outfits they had for sale on the marketplace... Too bad they're all so darn expensive though... (I payed 1200 MS Points to get the one song they had up so far, 1000 points for one outfit, and 500 points each for two other cool outfits....when 800 points is $10....it adds up...fast)
And that's pretty much all that's going on for me right now... If anyone cares to go see the Bleach movie in June when it comes to theaters or wants to get together to do something, please let me know. I'm bored out of my mind.
Oh and here's what you get when you try to condense all of the anime themed internet as we know it (4chan, 2chan, and niconico/youtube included) into 14 minutes:
Oh, and lately I've been working on making realistic photoshops and trying to hone my skills. Here's one of my attempts at making a custom plane paint job on a real F14D photo:

see relatedOnce again, Hello everyone! I know it's been a while, so here's the D-Meister giving more happy news.
I'll resist as long as I can from impulsively lashing out with super-charged-unlimited-happiness-works (those of you who've read my gtalk message know what I'm talking about), and first I'll talk about what's been going on.
Last week was midterms for me and I had a test in Engineering, a report in English, a test in Calculus 2, and two labs in computer science, all in 4 days. On top of the 4 crammed in homework assignments for engineering instead of the usual 2 per week that they gave us just since they can't measure time well.
Aside from that boring stuff I'm currently on spring break. Quite literally the instant I got back from work on the final day with classes (and a test) on Thursday (the 14th), I was busy packing up and then rode home. With barely any time to get out even my 360 to play 2 songs in my NEW iDOLM@STER: Live For You! sequel game that I got recently (more on it farther down), I had to leave the next morning with my younger brother and father to join them and the boy scout troop they're part of for a trip to Charleston, SC. That first night of the outing we were camping in a quick make-shift camp, and me having had more than my share of camping between my 9 years of boy scouts and 4 years of Civil Air Patrol decided I would simply sleep in the car (plus since they were planning on leaving at 6AM that made it easier for me in terms of functioning). The following day we went aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown retired aircraft carrier for historical tours and the troop (my family included of course) spent the next two nights sleeping aboard in one of the cabin areas.
Overall it was a nice stay and we went out to explore the town and one of the old naval forts, and on Monday my mother met up with us and we drove less than 20 miles to one of my Aunt's residences to stay that night and the next. We had a nice time catching up and then Wednesday we spent about 4 hours driving down to visit my grandparents in Jacksonville, FL, which is where I'm typing from now. Not much has happened since we got here aside from socializing and visiting the Navy Exchange (my grandfather is an RADM of the USCG so he's told me about how funny it's been trying to get new pins for his old dress uniform and they keep giving him the wrong service).
In any case, although it's been somewhat fun (I could've done without having to hang around a bunch of immature boy scouts especially the ones in the 12-14 years age range if you know what I mean), this wasn't exactly what I would've hoped for for spring break after that hell week I had with school the week before. To make it all the more tempting, I've got my brand new Idolmaster sequel game that I've barely played staring screaming at me, I recently bought the first volume of Shuffle on DVD, I bought the Great Teacher Onizuka anime which is really good, and last but OH MY DEAR SWEET GOSH NOT LEAST I got what 4chan has called the closest thing to a digital Jesus of the internet. I like to call it Codeword: Duke Nukem forever since for the longest time everyone considered the chances of either of them coming out anytime soon to be about the same, but low and behold it's finally actually come out.
And let me tell you, to a Rin Tohsaka fan like me, it is a godsend.
What I am talking about, is of course the UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS TRANSLATION PATCH (by mirror moon - www.mirrormoon.org).
I've already clocked about 2 days 4 hours 00 minutes and 32 seconds right now according to the status menu in the game on this path alone. It's taking me forever to read through it, but I am NOT complaining!! This is by far, singlehandedly the best Visual Novel I have ever read, heck, this is the most thought out anime/visual novel/game that I have ever seen (and by thought out I mean that's actually possibly for normal human beings to understand just from reading/playing/seeing it a few times (so Evangelion is ruled out)). It is so in-depth, so immersive, so well-written and dynamically told between the visuals and effects and music, it's a beautiful tour-de-force that I seriously found myself with tears crying at some parts and cheering with almost as much enthusiasm as watching Gurren Lagann for the first time!!!
The first time I started playing it I kept getting stuck at this one part where I couldn't figure out what it was that I had done wrong, so I got really tired of seeing this:

And then dying 30 seconds later from my character being a freakin moron. Plus the Tiger-dojo help tip thing was completely useless to me since it didn't make sense. Eventually I was able to figure it out on my own and found out my mistake was related to a decision several days back and one that I thought led to a DEAD END with the other option, but eventually I was able to continue.
Needless to say, this has been completely awesome. Sooooooo much fun I've been having a hard time trying to keep from exploding out all over the keyboard with incomprehensible jibber-jabber and retaining my thoughts to words in sentences. I'm almost done with the "True End" which still leaves me to play through to get the "Good End", and I must say, this is every Fate/Stay Night fan's dream come true. Not only does it explain tons, of the three arcs, if the "Fate" route was Star Wars ep4: A New Hope and the "Heaven's Feel" route was The Empire Strikes Back, then "Unlimited Blade Works" would be The Jedi Returns with ninja-ewoks, gundams fighting the Death Star, and Darth Vader using a light saber version of Gilgamesh's Gates of Babylon added in!
Plus if you're a Rin Tohsaka fan like me, this arc is a must. I don't know about Heaven's Feel, but unlike the Fate route Shirou ends up actually growing a spinal cord when it comes to girls in UBW and it's actually fun to read for once instead of getting the too common painful "oh come ON ALREADY!" reactions that we usually get from watching/reading things like Love Hina (the first 9 volumes or so) or just about any anime where the main character has no guts with girls. That, and I think the look on her face here is just priceless:

Yeah.......that was cool. I won't spoil everything and tell you what Shirou actually did but I'll just say I'd vote for him if he was in Saigar before I'd vote for all but Kamina and Lord Genome! He definitely got big points all throughout this route!
Now that I'm done expounding upon how awesome UBW is, I'll get back to talking about Idolmaster: Live For You.
....
on second thought, it's 12:01 AM, I'm still trying to finish this route whenever I can, and typing on the keyboard echoes in this room so I think I'll get back to you guys on that awesomeness next post.
